Does cataract surgery hurt?
At Wolf Eye Ambulatory Surgery Center, cataract surgery is typically performed by using a numbing jelly applied to the eye to eliminate pain. Also, a sedative administered under the tongue during the pre-operative process relaxes you, diminishing any anxiety. There are no needles used and in most cases an I.V. is not required, making this technique totally "needle free".
Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery involves removing the eye's natural focusing lens because it has become cloudy and replacing it with a clear plastic replacement lens within the eye. The conventional technique employs a rigid focus lens which will not adjust for varying distances, so glasses are typically required to sharpen vision after surgery. A newer, very exciting advance involves implanting a soft, flexible plastic lens which will change shape and focus for you without the need for glasses for many, if not most activities. Wolf Eye Associates has implanted a good number of these lenses, and patients seem to be very happy with their new found visual "fountain of youth!"
Is a laser used in cataract surgery?
This is a common misconception. No laser is used with any common cataract surgery technique. However, following surgery a cloudy membrane may later form behind the implanted clear plastic lens, causing your vision to become somewhat blurry. At this point a laser is used to painlessly open up that membrane in a 30 second in-office procedure restoring your sharp vision once again.
Will there be pre-op testing and a need to return to the office for a pre-surgery cataract work up?
When a cataract is diagnosed during your visit to Wolf Eye Associates and surgery has been decided upon, all testing and scheduling is done at that same visit for your convenience. Typically no blood work or x rays are required.
How long after surgery before I get my glasses?
Two weeks after your cataract surgery you will usually be healed and ready for glasses to sharpen your vision. During that two week period you will be up and around, and no patch over your eye is required.
If I choose the conventional surgery instead of the adjustable implant, what will my vision be like during the wait for glasses?
In some cases soon after the surgery your vision is quite good, but in others it takes time for the eye to heal and during that time the vision is somewhat blurry. Not a problem, however, for after the healing has occurred in the vast majority of cases excellent vision will be the result.
What is the typical patient reaction following cataract surgery at Wolf Eye Associates?
The two phrases we hear over and over following surgery are "piece of cake" and "nothing to it"!
