How LASER VISION CORRECTION Works
A Word About PRK
PRK (Photrefractive Keratectomy) is an alternative type of Laser Vision Correction procedure to LASIK. Instead of creating a corneal flap as with LASIK, only the skin of the cornea is painlessly peeled back and removed to allow for laser reshaping of the cornea. After the laser treatment the area is covered with a protective contact lens worn 24hrs a day, which is left in place for a week. Vision may be somewhat blurry during this healing phase. Because there is no flap with PRK there can be no flap related complications! The disadvantage of PRK is that it takes a few days longer to achieve clear vision, and an occasional PRK patient will experience some discomfort for a day or two after the procedure. Because of the far greater safety of PRK, Wolf Eye Associates is performing this procedure exclusively at this time.
LASIK reshapes the clear crystalline cornea with laser controlled accuracy to improve the way light focuses within the eye. This results in complete elimination or great reduction in the need for glasses or contact lenses.
First, Dr. Wolf painlessly creates a thin corneal flap which is then folded out of the area to be treated.

With the LASIK procedure, the doctor first lifts a thin layer of the cornea to create a "flap" that stays connected on one side. |
Next, Dr. Wolf, in a matter of seconds, uses the laser beam to reshape the inner corneal bed.
|
|
Next, the Excimer Laser sculpts the cornea with a cool ultraviolet light. |
The operation concludes with Dr. Wolf repositioning the corneal flap over the newly reshaped corneal bed. No stitches are needed. The corneal flap adheres naturally to the underlying corneal bed.
|
|
Finally, the doctor returns the "flap" to its original position for a quick, natural recovery. |
Anesthetic eye drops are used for the Laser Vision Correction procedure. A sedative given orally before the procedure helps relieve anxiety and makes LASIK and/or PRK easy and almost fun to experience.
